Database design has taken so many leaps since this book was written, but the concepts you'll find in this book are still very sound. As a beginning data modeler you would gain a lot from these pages.

The contents are good. But it's not easy to read. It's not the material, it's the writer.

I needed it for the class I was taking. How is it possible to make something that is relativily easy to be so complicated?

The book is well written, thorough, practical, and well steeped in solid theory. My copy of the book was published in 1989. And, now, lo these twenty years later, the excellent information contained within remains extraordinarily relevant.The authors, Candace Fleming and Barbara von Halle, come across in this very readable text as fully arrived professionals who approach complicated problems from a solid theoretical foundation. Contained between the covers of this excellent book is actually a full blown methodology for the intrinsically related disciplines of logical data modeling and relational database design. Yes, it is true that the computing industry moves fast, in terms of technological innovation. I purchased this book because it was a mandatory reference in database course. This contains lots of fundamental concepts of relational database. It is a well-organized book starting from LDM rules then to RDD rules with tons of practical examples. The authors does a very good job in explaining and clarifying all the essences, even a trivial point is made clear. This is a must-have for all of you who have to deal with relational database.

The best book of its kind. Still great for logical data modeling. I am recommending it for my Privacy Engineering class.

This book teaches a product independant step by step approach to design a relational database. The autors clearly differentiate between data modeling (ERM) and Relational Database Design. Even if the book is older than 10 years, it is very helpful to design databases with current products like Oracle 9i, DB2 V8 etc.
