I have been somewhat coding my own websites for several years. What I do is start out with some sort of template or other site and then figure out how to code the changes I want to make them unique. This can be frustrating at best when you aren't familiar enough with CSS so I finally bit the bullet and bought a book. I'm glad that I bought the right one because this one rocks! I don't think that I got through the entire book in one day but this made learning CSS so much easier than I thought it would be. There are numerous examples and illustrations included, which is how I learn the best. Also, there are end-of-chapter exercises and a bonus project included in the book. A great resource for CSS.
If you're looking for simplicity, yet precise and to the point, this is it. I've bought a number of detailed books on CSS and still found some knowledge I didn't find in learning CSS. One example is the difference between DIV and SPAN. I never knew one was a dividing element and one was inline. You'd think I'd have learned that but for some reason in the HTML and CSS AND Dreamweaver books I've read, none ever told me that. The book is very well planned out with chapters which makes it a great reference book for most of the CSS things you'll use if you forget. Further, the Exercises to download and play with, in Dreamweaver, makes it a useful hands-on how-to to truly understand. The book actually helped me to move on to the greater areas of CSS I needed to know in moving to building responsive websites. You need a good grasp on CSS to truly understand the responsive movement the web is headed to with mobile applications.
I have been doing a lot of HTML and CSS coding for a long time. All of it was self taught by viewing source code from html pages. I really wish I would have had a book like this. I am sure that my trial and error (mostly error) coding experience would have been less stressful. Everything you need to know about creating eye-catching Cascading Style Sheets is included in this quick and easy guide. The hands on coding exercises wonderfully compliment each chapter and make make learning so much easier. The first three chapters are dedicated to HTML and the rest to CSS. If you are new to programming or, like me, have forgotten more than you remember, this guide is fantastic and I could not recommend it any higher.
After purchasing a so called "drag-and-drop" (thrive themes) wordpress theme and plugin solution I soon realised that this or any other theme would be hopelessly inadequate without a basic understanding of CSS (and HTML). This very short book "CSS (with HTML5): Learn CSS in One Day" has done exactly what it promised to do i.e. I've learnt sufficient CSS and basic HTML to customise the pages in the drag-and-drop solution. I'm sure there must be loads more to learn about CSS but for my purposes with respect to using the so called Drag-and-Drop software this book has done the job perfectly and quickly.I found the exercises particularly useful and easily accessed from the author's website.
Like many others, I finally became frustrated by manipulating html code to get what I wanted - without really understanding the code itself. Very frustrating. I bought HTML & CSS: Design and Build Websites by Duckett; it is a great reference, but not really a start-to-finish explanation of html code. Then I got this book and all of a sudden things seem more logical and make sense. I have it open in the Kindle app on a window on my laptop and have Notepad++ (great, BTW) open in another window. The book is well written and everything is simply explained.
I was not impressed with this book. It is poorly organized, poorly published, and not very rich in content. The price point makes it seem like it's a "no risk" purchase. But, there are relatively few pages and, again, the useful content is almost non-existent.
Very clear. It doesn't support even looking at the exercises on my tablet, which was frustrating; though I can see the point in trying to make someone do them on a computer. But I would have liked to LOOK at them at least.
I've read other books by this author, including his HTML book in the same series. This is a quick read covering CSS, and includes code for some new attributes I had not seen before..This is a good text on CSS but please be sure you know HTML before hand since the treatment of HTML is a bit superficial.
